This region is influenced by both cold polar waters and warmer waters of the North Atlantic current, with changes in this current system impacting upon the distribution of fish and the yields of fisheries in the area. It encompasses shelf waters and deep open sea areas with a diverse ecosystem and numerous bycatch species.
Of particular concern is the long-lived (>250 years) deep-water Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus), IUCN Red Listed as Vulnerable and with a large annual bycatch. There is high public interest in this species and development and testing of mitigation technologies is needed.
